As the light wanes and the air turns crisp, we invite artists to explore the thinning boundary between the seen and the unseen. Across the Veil is a seasonal celebration of the transition into the darker half of the year—a time of harvest, transformation, and ancient memory. This exhibition seeks artwork that captures the atmospheric shift of the autumn landscape and the spiritual resonance of the natural world.
Work may be submitted during Gallery hours or by appointment beginning September 16. The deadline for submissions is Sunday, September 27. When submissions are brought to Gallery X the artist must fill out a submission slip with basic contact and labeling information.
Thematic Explorations / Inspiration
Diverse interpretations of the theme are welcome, but if you need some inspiration consider these explorations of the Across the Veil
The Glow of the Changing Woods – Artwork that focuses on the visceral beauty of the season. We are looking for works that capture the fleeting brilliance of the changing leaves, the low-angled amber light of October, and the rugged textures of the New England coastline as it prepares for dormancy. Whether through representational landscapes or abstract studies of color and light, these works should evoke the “glow” that precedes the frost.
Equinox & The Old Gods – The autumn equinox marks a moment of perfect balance before the tilt into darkness. Delve into the folklore and mythology that haunt the woods and waters. We encourage submissions inspired by “Old Gods,” ancient seasonal rites, and the personification of nature. These pieces should bridge the gap between the historical and the mystical, honoring the spirits that reside in the old growth and the deep tides.
The Thinning Veil – There is a specific stillness that comes with the falling leaves—a sense that the “veil” between the physical and spirit worlds has grown translucent. Explore the ethereal, the ghostly and the spiritual realm. From the hazy mist over a morning marsh to figurative works exploring our ancestors and the unseen, this is an invitation to paint the atmosphere of the “other side.”
Submission Styles & Mediums
We are seeking a diverse range of interpretations, including:
- Atmospheric Landscapes: Capturing the unique light, mood, and weather of the season.
- Abstract Realism: Using color and form to evoke the feeling of change and transition.
- Figurative & Symbolic: Exploring the relationship between humanity, the spirit world, and ancient traditions.
- All mediums welcome: Paintings (oil, acrylic, watercolor), Drawings (graphite, charcoal, mixed), Printmaking, Photography, Digital Art, Sculpture, Ceramics, Fiber Arts, & More.
The mood of Across the Veil is one of quiet intensity and reverence. We seek work that feels grounded in the earth yet elevated by the spirit—honoring the beauty of the harvest while acknowledging the mystery of the shadows to come.
