Gallery X Artist Membership
The Gallery X Artist Membership is for any visual or performing artists, ages 18 and up (for younger creatives check out Youth Memberships). Membership is ideal for artists who are seeking to exhibit their work, organize their own programming, and/or be a more active participant in the arts. Individuals and families of all backgrounds are welcome and encouraged to join; whether you are a hobbyist looking to share your talents, a professional artist with years of experience, a student just beginning to explore the art world, or anyone and everyone in between Gallery X is for you!
Am I an artist?
At Gallery X we recognize that every artist is unique with their own individual talents, skills, and interpretations of their craft, so if you enjoy creating or performing in any way then we say, ‘yes, you are an artist!’ Our membership includes both traditional and experimental visual artists creating in nearly every medium (painting, printmaking, photography, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, etc.) as well as musicians, educators, poets, actors, and comedians. Members of Gallery X come from a wide array of backgrounds, and include formally trained artists, self taught artists, students, and hobbyists of all ages and skill levels.
How to Join
Simply fill out a membership application and submit it during gallery hours or during any of our Monthly Members’ Meeting, applications may also be submitted by email to GalleryXNB@gmail.com. If you’ve never shown at Gallery X before please provide a few examples or images of your work. We encourage all new and prospective members to attend a meeting to introduce yourself and learn more about the gallery and how it operates. Monthly Members’ Meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month at 6:00pm.
Card to Culture Discounted Memberships
Gallery X is proud to participate in Mass Cultural Council’s Card to Culture program in collaboration with the Department of Transitional Assistance, the Department of Public Health’s WIC Nutrition Program, the Massachusetts Health Connector, and hundreds of organizations by making cultural programming accessible to those for whom cost is a participation barrier.
EBT, WIC, and ConnectorCare cardholders receive 50% off an annual Individual Artist Membership. To receive a discounted membership through Card to Culture all you need to do is fill out a membership application, check off ‘Card to Culture Discount’, and then show your card when you turn in your application. Artist Member Benefits
All artist members are entitled to the following benefits:
- Submit artwork to all Gallery X exhibitions free of charge.
- Discounted commission rate. Gallery X members are subject to a 25% commission on works sold (non-members are subject to a 35% commission).
- Be part of a community of artists and creatives working in a plethora of media and styles.
- 10% discount on all Gallery X purchases.
- 50% discount on event or exhibition rentals.
- Members in good standing after a minimum one year of membership can submit proposals for a free small group or one person show in the Douglass Gallery.
- Curatorial opportunities for members to present special themed exhibitions.
- Sponsor performances or other events.
- Profile on the Gallery X Members’ page on our website. (coming soon)
Member Responsibilities
As a member of Gallery X you are a part of New Bedford’s creative community and play an integral role in one of the longest-running community, cooperative art galleries in the area.
- All members are encouraged to attend our monthly meetings, held the second Wednesday of every month at 6:00pm. Artist members are eligible to vote on proposals as well as propose their own ideas and programs.
- When possible members are expected to volunteer their time assisting in gallery activities and operations such as; hanging exhibitions, patching and painting walls between shows, keeping the gallery clean, and gallery sitting**.
Annual Dues
All memberships run 12 months from the date joined, the payment of annual dues can be broken into installments.
**Members are eligible to receive a $20 credit towards the following year’s dues renewal for each day they gallery sit during the year, up to 4 sittings. Every sitting over 4 will provide a $10 credit membership renewal. Credits received for gallery sitting will be applied to the member’s next renewal and will not be paid out in cash or check to the member. Sitting credits reset upon each renewal.

Gallery X promotes a mission of cultural outreach through community partnerships, programming, and monthly art exhibits to stimulate artistic awareness in New Bedford and the surrounding communities. We offer a platform for artists, performers, and creatives of all ages, skill levels, and backgrounds a safe, professional space to showcase their talents.
