Evelyn White Memorial Retrospective

The Evelyn White Memorial Retrospective is an exhibition of the life and work of Evelyn Schueler White (1935-2017), an award-winning painter and printmaker from Dartmouth, Massachusetts. The show, organized and curated by Zachary M. White, will feature works in a wide range of subject and media.
Born in New Jersey, Evelyn White moved with her family as a teenager to Dartmouth in 1949. Following graduation from Dartmouth High School, Evelyn attended the Rhode Island School of Design for two years with a focus in illustration. After marrying and starting a family, Evelyn returned to art, this time in graphics and printmaking. By 1967 she began taking courses at the Swain School of Design in New Bedford and continued her art education there through 1973. During this period she became a mainstay at many local and regional art shows and exhibitions, regularly exhibiting at Ruth Atkinson’s annual outdoor exhibit in Padanaram, the Marion Art Center, and the Factori Gallery in New Bedford as well as showing as a member of the Providence Water Color Club, Art Association of Newport, and Cambridge Art Association.
By 1976 Evelyn had stepped away from the art scene and her work, thus ending a brief, yet extremely prolific, 10-15 year period as an exhibiting artist, during which, she produced hundreds of pieces of original works and won numerous awards while showing alongside such locally prominent artists as Norman Fortier, Tom Tavares, and Mary Lindenberg. After a 30-year hiatus, Evelyn began painting again, this time alongside her daughter, Diane, at the Dartmouth Council on Aging’s Tuesday morning art classes with Carol Veiga. Paintings soon flowed with nearly the same prolificacy as they had some three decades earlier and continued this way until her passing in 2017.
The Evelyn White Memorial Retrospective will be on view in the Douglass Gallery at Gallery X, 169 William St., from October 2nd to October 27th. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, October 5th from 5-8pm. AHA! night, Thursday October 10th.
